Sirenomelia, a very rare birth deformity and if found in about one out of 100,000 live births. Alternatively known as mermaid syndrome, this congenital deformity. It is described as a deformity where the two legs are fused together making it look like a mermaid’s tail.
Mermaid Girl Shiloh Pepin has become well know because of this after she was featured in a recent documentary as the ‘Little Mermaid Girl’. This is usually fatal as a number of complications are associated with this such as abnormal kidney and bladder development,
Shiloh Pepin is only one of three surviving sirenomelia (mermaid syndrome) patients who do not have the usual kidney and bladder complications. She was born in Kennebunkport, Maine in August, 1999, with her lower extremities fused, a missing bladder, uterus, colon and vagina, with only one partial kidney and one ovary. She is going to be 10 years old this August 2009.
