If you happen to watch Umagang Kay Ganda, you’ve probably saw the commercial about a couple waking up in the morning and using sign language to communicate with each other instead of talking (because of morning breath). It was a commercial about a new nighttime toothpaste called Dentiste.
I was able to get a sample of Dentiste toothpaste for a product review on this blog, but before I even tried it, I was off to Google and see what this product is all about and what is good about it.
Here are some of the facts I found:
Dentiste is positioned to be a nighttime toothpaste. What makes this unique is the technology behind the cleaning and controlling the growth of bacteria. Other toothpaste primarily uses Fluoride to do the job. However, fluoride does have bad effect if sufficient amount of it is ingested which is why children has a special toothpaste that doesn’t have fluoride. (If you have children, you are probably aware of that). In my case, my kid uses Sa** Fl*o which has Xylitol instead of Fluoride.
(Reference: Fluoride Poisoning -http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fluoride_poisoning)
Dentiste also uses Xylitol and does not have fluoride. Apart from this, it also has 14 Natural Extracts that serves as antiseptic and antibacterial such as Eucalyptus, Chamomile, cinnamon, mint..etc which prevents oral bacteria, gum diseases and bad breath.
I did some research on Xylitol and here are some pretty good facts about it.
“Xylitol reduces plaque formation and bacterial adherence
(i.e., is antimicrobial), inhibits enamel demineralization (i.e.,
reduces acid production), and has a direct inhibitory effect on
MS.” (Note: MS = “maternal Streptococcus mutans (MS)
transmission”)

So when evening came, I was excited to try it out and see for myself firsthand. What I first noticed about it is that it is thick compared to the usual toothpaste in the market. In fact you only need to squeeze out 1 cm of toothpaste.
During brushing, I really liked the taste. I think the eucalyptus, mint, cinnamon really did its job to make brushing, a pleasant experience. In terms of morning breath, the product brochure says 93% of Dentiste users who brush their teeth before going to bed experienced a decrease in bad breath. Although there isn’t a scientific way for me to verify this, I feel somehow that indeed there seems to be an improvement in my morning breath. Unfortunately, I don’t have any scientific device that can measure this so it is fairly subjective. To really get the job done, make sure you brush your tongue and the sides of your mouth since there is also bacteria on those places. It is also best to floss to get rid of stuff in between your teeth.
In terms of price, Dentiste costs more. However, comparing 2 products on the price alone isn’t really a good idea since different toothpaste cater different markets and of course special toothpaste such as this one uses a different teeth cleaning and protecting technology. It’s like comparing cars of different brands (ie Cherry vs. Honda). Both will do the job of bringing you to your destination but each have their own merits.
I see this product as a good second toothpaste. Not really to replace your usual brand if you don’t want to but as an addition to your oral care arsenal. People who would gain most benefit for using this would be those who have really bad morning breath, smokers, people who enjoy caffeinated drinks and alcohol, people undergoing dental treatments which require extensive oral care, diabetic patients, and as an alternative to children’s toothpaste.
So tomorrow morning, ask your wife, friend, or any of your housemates if you have morning breath and try it out.

I used to wake up with horrible morning breath. Since using Dentiste it’s no longer a worry. In fact, my mouth feels so clean sometimes I even forget to brush! Thanks.”
